Humble Abode

Papa found this tiny nest in his yard. A lightweight home that was most likely lifted from its perch in the wind and rain.  Michaela was most disconcerted that there were some baby birds without a home. I tried to explain to her that it had most likely already been abandoned, long forgotten since the "babies" were now "mama's and papa's" and they had gone off to build a place of their own. "Well what about putting it back for another bird to use?" she asked. Again, no bird wants to rent a place that smells like another bird. Right? They know.
Her solution was to come home and fill it with an egg of her own. I humored her and let her put an egg from the fridge in it. It didn't quite fit.

We were amazed at the handiwork. How do they know how to make it so perfect? Tiny, a perfect circle. We could not help but marvel at the intricate creation. And what resourcefulness! String, grass, hair, fuzz, lint...all recycled into a perfect cocoon in which to snuggle and "nest". Truly, a humble abode.

We have no idea what kind of nest this is. A Wren? Hummingbird? I've googled it and neither seem to fit. With the housing market as it is, I think we'll take over this foreclosure. It is a beautiful piece of art that reminds me that life goes on around me and that God watches over it all. At one point in time while I was stressing or worrying, running crazy, some little life was working to build her own home, and was created to know how and where. It makes me think of that old hymn "His Eye is on the Sparrow"--a reminder that if He watches over the tiniest of creatures, He certainly watches over me.
